The great triangle
of land that stretches down from the Po and pushes southwards towards
the Ligurian Apennine was, at the time of the Viscontis, known as
the "Ultra Padum" "beyond the Po". Today it bears
the name Oltrepò Pavese and the shape of its territory, as
seen on a map, is incredibly reminiscent of a bunch of grapes: a mark
of destiny, perhaps?
This is a considerably large stretch of land and it is almost a sin
to mention only a few of the communes that make it up: Varzi, Montalto,
Pavese, with its sixteenth-century castle, Fortunago, with its pretty
mediaeval village and stone-built houses, Calvignano, Pitera de' Giorgi
and Cigognola, Santa Maria della Versa, Casteggio and Canneto Pavese,
Broni, Stradella, Montù Beccaria and lastly Bosnasco, almost
bordering on the territory of the Piacenza region. |
